Практика в Сингапуре: жизнь на $1500 и deep learning

На момент поиска стажировки я понимал, что мне нравится deep learning. COOP сотрудничает в том числе с университетами Сингапура: я подал заявку, меня выбрали – и я поехал в Сингапур. На работе я занимался исследовательской частью в Институте геномики Сингапура. 

Мой проект был посвящен использовании deep learning в нахождении мутаций рака из ДНК. Этот проект будет помогать предотвращать рак на ранней стадии. Я успешно завершил работу, поэтому после мой супервайзер предложил учиться на PhD в Сингапуре. Отказался, так как хотел остаться в Канаде. К тому же эту степень нужно получать шесть лет: для меня это слишком долго.

Terms and conditions

The following terms and conditions must be met during the period of the scholarship.

The Canadian post-secondary institution must:

• be a Designated Learning Institution (DLI);
• waive tuition and/or administrative fees for scholarship recipients, as selected students must be registered full-time and paying tuition to their home institution;
• inform both the candidate and their home institution of any mandatory fees that, in exceptional cases, cannot be waived, prior to applying for a scholarship on the candidate’s behalf;
• enter into an agreement with the recipient stating that:
  • funding for the scholarship is provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD);
  • the recipient must provide the Canadian institution with records to account for major expenses such as travel and lodging; and
  • the recipient agrees to have their contact information shared with DFATD, for reasons such as: to be invited to join the Government of Canada Scholars’ Alumni Association (GCSAA), to attend events organized by the Canadian Embassy, High Commission or Canadian Trade Office in their home country/territory and by DFATD in Canada, or for promotional and statistical purposes; and
• submit qualitative and quantitative reports during the scholarship period.

Scholarship recipients:

• must engage in full-time studies or research as defined by the Canadian institution;
• must be proficient in the language of instruction at the Canadian institution (English or French) before their arrival in Canada, as the scholarship does not cover language training. Language requirements are set by each Canadian institution;
• may not hold any other scholarship granted by the Government of Canada;
• carrying out a semester-based study exchange must arrive in Canada by September for the fall semester or by January for the winter semester;
• conducting research must arrive in Canada for the uptake of their award between June 1, 2021 but no later than February 1, 2022. Failure to arrive during this time may result in the cancellation of the scholarship. In exceptional cases, and with prior approval from DFATD, the arrival deadline may be extended to March 1, 2022;
• enrolled in pharmacy, medicine, dentistry or other health fields are excluded from clinical training or clinically-oriented research involving direct patient-care;
• must ensure that they have appropriate health insurance for the full duration of the scholarship, as per the policies of the Canadian institution;
• must focus primarily on full-time studies or research during their stay in Canada; and
• are expected to return to their home institutions after the scholarship period in order to complete their studies.

Important information:

• Applications at the college or undergraduate levels must be accompanied by a valid student exchange agreement between the Canadian institution and the candidate’s home institution. The agreement must state that tuition fees are waived for scholarship recipients. College or undergraduate applications for research traineeships or internships at Canadian institutions with no exchange agreements or MOUs with the candidates’ home institutions are also accepted. Such applications must be accompanied by a letter issued by the Canadian institution’s international office or equivalent, linking the application to a specific international research collaboration, naming the Canadian supervisor who has agreed to mentor the student during the scholarship period, and confirming that tuition fees, if any, will be waived for the recipient. Such a letter must be uploaded in lieu of an inter-institutional agreement. 
• For graduate applications, an inter-institutional agreement is desirable but not mandatory. If there is no existing exchange agreement, graduate applications which involve a new or established collaboration between professors from a Canadian institution and the candidate’s home institution will be accepted.
• Applications submitted directly by a candidate or their home institution will not be accepted.
• Scholarships cannot be deferred and are not renewable.
• Scholarships are not taxable for either the Canadian institution or the scholarship recipient.

Eligibility

To participate

• your country or territory of citizenship must have an agreement with Canada that allows you to apply for an IEC work permit or
• you may be able to use a recognized organization (RO)

You must also meet the for your country or territory of citizenship and the pool you’re applying for.

Some countries only allow you to participate once. Others allow you to participate twice, but in different pools. Because each country is different, it’s important that you check to see if you’re eligible to apply.

Even if you’re issued an invitation to apply (ITA), you can’t participate more times than your country allows. Make sure you read and understand all the requirements before you submit an application.

Even if you hold a refugee travel document issued by a country that has a youth mobility agreement with Canada, you’re not eligible to participate.

Dependants

Your aren’t eligible to accompany you to Canada under the IEC program. However, they may apply to visit, study or work in Canada. Your application will be examined separately from theirs.

Получение визы

Обязательным условием при трудоустройстве является рабочая виза в Канаду. Оформление документации предполагает выполнение следующих действий:

1. Поиск подходящей вакансии.
2. Заключение договора с нанимателем.
3. Работодатель должен получить разрешение в Министерстве трудовых ресурсов, а затем переслать его вместе с приглашением претенденту.
4. Соискатель готовит необходимый пакет с документами и подает его в посольство Канады для оформления визы.
5. Проводится собеседование с служащим консульской службы.
6. Предоставляется виза.

Для процедуры оформления понадобится паспорт, анкета, приглашение от работодателя, копия диплома, медицинская страховка, справка об отсутствии судимостей и квитанция об оплате визового сбора. Все документы должны быть переведены на английский и заверены нотариусом.

Виза имеет максимальный срок действия – 4 года. На оформление уходит примерно 30 дней. После подачи заявления проводится собеседование.

Варианты иммиграции без знания языка

В Канаде действует три основных направления приема иммигрантов:

1. Социальное (как правило, это брак или воссоединение с уже живущей в Канаде семьей);
2. Гуманитарное (программы помощи беженцам);
3. Профессиональное (закрывает потребность страны в кадрах нужной квалификации);
4. Пилотная программа атлантических провинций (AIPP) — правительство Канады создало специальную программу для развития провинций. В данной программе есть три варианта для кандидата по работе.Всё что нужно от мигранта — найти работодателя, оформить необходимые документы и сдать тест по английскому языку всего на 4 бала. На данный момент, эта программа доступна в провинциях:
   • Провинции Ньюфаундленд и Лабрадор;
   • Нью-Брансуик;
   • Новая Шотландия;
   • Остров Принца Эдуарда.

Для первых двух категорий языковой экзамен не играет решающей роли. Проблема возникает на этапе поиска работы.

Местные организации не имеют права на трудоустройство иммигрантов без официального разрешения на работу в Канаде. Это грозит проблемами — как для работодателя, так и для работника.

Санкции серьёзные — вплоть до депортации из страны. Амнистий для нелегалов в Канаде не бывает. Это не означает, что получение работы без языка невозможно. Но путь к официальной квалифицированной высокооплачиваемой работе фактически закрыт.

Как получить разрешение на работу в Канаде и рабочую визу

Чтобы начать легально зарабатывать деньги в Канаде нужно:

• Найти подходящего работодателя.
• Заключить с ним контракт.
• Получить приглашение на работу.
• Подать прошение на получение рабочей визы.

Оформлением приглашения занимается сам работодатель в Канаде.

Если у вас нет работодателя, воспользуйтесь другими способами уехать жить в Канаду.

Как только вы получите приглашение, можно обращаться в ближайшее канадское посольство в вашей стране с пакетом документов:

1. Действующий загранпаспорт.
2. Две стандартные фотографии на документы.
3. Приглашение от канадского работодателя.
4. Документы, подтверждающие квалификацию.
5. Ксерокопия страниц гражданского паспорта;
6. Квитанция об оплате пошлины (155 CAN, что равняется примерно 7700 российским рублям);
7. Заявление на получение разрешения на работу.

Все предоставленные документы должны быть переведены на английский или французский язык незаинтересованным профессиональным переводчиком, то есть таким, который не приходится родственником или близким другом аппликанту.

В некоторых случаях можно напрямую звонить в офисы интересующих компаний и узнавать, какие специалисты нужны и каким требованиям должны соответствовать. Имеет смысл обращаться в крупные канадские компании: Canadian Natural Resources, The Woodbridge Company, Imperial Oil, Sun Life Financial. Практика и работа

В рамках программы я год учился по обмену в Швейцарии в ETH Zürich – это ведущий технический университет, из которого вышло 32 нобелевских лауреата. Еще там преподавал Альберт Эйнштейн. Предметы тут посложнее, но во время семестра было намного легче, потому что домашние работы либо отсутствовали, либо отнимали мало времени.

Все обучение стоило $500, что по сравнению с вузами в Америке можно назвать почти бесплатным. В Америке только одни учебники обойдутся в такую сумму. Но в Европе университеты меньше решают вопросы быта. Например, UBC помогает с жильем, бесплатно предоставляет комнаты для кружков, курирует кафе и рестораны по всему кампусу и т.д.

Я выбрал колледж ALGONQUIN — он рядом и с моим домом и один из самых известных. Правда, близость к дому роли не сыграла — в пандемию все занимаются удаленно.

Для поступления нужно было сдать два экзамена: математику и английский. Математика очень простая: в экзамене реально было задание на сложение дробей. Я с такими задачами сыну в школе помогаю, а тут экзамен в колледж. С английским было посложнее, его я сдал со второго раза. Но каких-то невероятных трудностей нет — думаю, поступить сможет почти любой. Для поступления не стал выбирать ничего специфического — взял General курс с упором на разработку на Java.

После поступления я заполнил заявку на грант и получил одобрение. Насколько я знаю, одобряют тоже почти всем. Потом началась учеба. Учеба дистанционная, но это на время пандемии. Поэтому расскажу именно про такой процесс — офлайн я поучиться не успел.

У нас в колледже есть внутренняя учебная система, в которой мы видим наш класс и предметы. Все предметы поделены на лекции и лабораторные работы. Лекции можно не посещать, но лабораторные работы надо сдавать четко в дедлайны. Если не сдать, можно в итоге получить низкую финальную оценку и завалить курс. Тогда его придется пересдавать за дополнительную оплату, причем грант это уже не покроет. В этом семестре преподаватели подготовились к удаленке лучше, чем в прошлых. Они предзаписали лекции, и можно прослушать хоть все разом, а потом выполнять работы.

Лабораторных очень много, как индивидуальных, так и групповых. Плюс есть глобальные проекты, которые собираются из нескольких лабораторных. Задачи разные: например, мы делали полноценный сайт, а сейчас делаем мобильное приложение под Android. Есть и попроще — например, дают готовый код на Java и предлагают его модифицировать. Еще мы писали на Java игру «Морской бой». Все лабораторные прикладные.

Кроме технических предметов есть и другие. Например, у нас был предмет Communications, где мы учились общаться с коллегами, составлять презентации, выступать на публике и заполнять документы. А еще нужно было обязательно взять по своему желанию два курса вообще не по теме, для общего развития. Я выбрал «Wine and food», думал расслабиться — а там сорта винограда, кислоты, органолептика. Лучше бы просто налили мне вина 🙂

Через год после учебы ты отправляешься искать практику. Здесь она устроена не так, как в России. Студент полноценно устраивается в компанию, и ему платят деньги. Практика длится 4–8 месяцев, в зависимости от работодателя. Пока идет практика, учебных занятий нет, а студент ходит к работодателю как на обычную работу и получает зарплату. Не как полноценный IT-инженер, но выше минимальной оплаты труда, и для студента это неплохо.

Я практику пока не проходил. Сейчас до сентября у меня время просматривать вакансии на внутреннем портале колледжа и подавать заявки туда, куда мне интересно. Я сразу смотрю места в правительственных компаниях, чтобы в будущем работать именно там. Такие вакансии есть. Компании вообще охотно нанимают практикантов — они получают дешевую рабочую силу, плюс имеют возможность вырастить IT-инженера под свои требования.

Off-campus work and completion of a program of studies

Students who have not applied for a subsequent study or work permit or a program of study

Students may work off campus on a if the following applies:

• they meet the eligibility criteria to work off campus
• they have completed the final academic requirements for their program of study but have not yet received written confirmation of program completion from their institution (for instance, a transcript, an official letter or an email)
• they have not applied for a work permit (for instance, a post-graduation work permit or a work permit with a valid Labour Market Impact Assessment) or a study permit extension or enrolled in a subsequent program of study

Once a student receives written confirmation of program completion from their institution, they are no longer authorized to continue to work in Canada, as they no longer meet the eligibility criteria in paragraph R186(v). They should apply to change their status (for instance, to visitor status) or leave Canada before their study permit becomes invalid as per .
